TODAY’S THE DAY.
I’ve officially been named President of ONE at College of the Canyons! Now is my time to elaborate on what ONE’s mission is, and who I am how how together as one, we can make a big, big change!
ONE was founded by eleven organizations: Bread for the World, CARE, DATA, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, Oxfam America, Plan USA, Save the Children U.S., World Concern, and World Vision. ONE’s mission is to eliminate global poverty as well as treat curable diseases in third world countries. Throughout the years, ONE has garnered over 2.4 million members to help the fight in global poverty! Check out the timeline to see how ONE has made a difference:
16 May 2004. The official ONE rally launch at Liberty Mall in Philadelphia. Roughly 2,000 attended the rally, including notable persons Bono, Dikembe Mutombo, Michael W. Smith, Richard Stearns (President of World Vision), and David Beckmann (President of Bread for the World).
December 2004. ONE announces a $3 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In correspondence to the announcement, Mark McKinnon (adviser to President Bush) and Mike McCurry (adviser to the Kerry Campaign) appeared on CNN’s Inside Politics with Judy Woodruff in ONE’s support.
22 May 2007. The Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria announced that it had saved 1.8 million lives since 2002, as well as roughly doubling the services in the past year. ONE members had advocated for the increases to the Global Fund in both 2006 and 2007.
June 2007. ONE launched ONE Vote ‘08 to mobilize American voters to engage the presidential candidates about the issues of global poverty and diseases. ONE Vote ‘08 is co-chaired by former Senate Majority Leaders Tom Daschle (D-SD) and Bill Frist (R-TN). In addition, the ONE initiative has gained official and unofficial endorsements from presidential candidates John Edwards and Bill Richardson.
2008. ONE merged with DATA. The two organizations are now run by CEO David Lane.
NOW AS FOR ME…
Well, my name is Dréa Rewal. (That’s me in the middle of the COC ONE Blog logo :)) I’ve been an active advocate of the ONE Campaign and (PRODUCT)RED since both of their launches in 2004 and 2006 (respectively). I have campaigned with both organizations throughout southern California throughout the years, helping to raise awareness for both causes. Solo, I’ve provided over five months of live-saving medicine via PRODUCT(RED). I’m an early graduate from West Ranch High School (‘09), and have been attending College of the Canyons since 2007.
I’m beyond ecstatic about being elected President of OCC COC! I’m hoping to raise awareness on campus through many fun, interactive events and will be planning a first meeting very soon! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will get back to you right away!
